Crowdy explores how a furnished layout and its occupancy affect movement to exits.

Geometry

Imported plans use their measured or estimated scale; the sample uses 32 pixels per metre. Walls define the floor bounds; wall segments and furniture block movement. Boundary exits include a short landing beyond the floor. Review imported geometry before running.

Movement

JuPedSim uses a collision-free speed model with body-clear routes around obstacles. Both modes start immediately. Natural mode starts immediately, varies desired speeds slightly, and periodically compares estimated travel plus doorway queue time. Exit changes require a clear benefit and a cooldown. Direct mode keeps the initial nearest exit. These are illustrative assumptions, not calibrated predictions.

Reported time

Evacuation time is available only when everyone exits. Trapped people have no body-clear route to an available exit at the start and remain stationary and visible in red. The run ends when everyone with a route has left, or at the configured time limit. People with a route still inside at that limit are reported separately. Average exit time counts only people who reached an exit.

Playback

Playback follows recorded positions and their simulation timestamps. 1× advances one simulated second per real second. Reduced motion starts runs paused. Shoulder ellipses face the measured walking direction with smoothed turns; collision and route clearance still use circular bodies, with no sideways squeezing. Red means trapped. Body width defaults to 46 cm (a 23 cm radius), is adjustable from 40–70 cm, and sets both the shoulder span and collision diameter. Door widths come from the floor geometry; wide exits can support people abreast. Estimated drawing scale affects their measured width.
